When Todd woke Monday morning, his first thoughts were of Holly. They hadn’t been together long, but, already, it was the most stable intimate relationship he’d ever had. He took her to a movie the night before and enjoyed popcorn and candy M&M’s. As far as relationships go, his time with Jake was like spending his time with an older brother. He stretched and glanced toward his bedroom window. He then thought of the Air Force.

A few weeks ago, he’d put in for the programming and designing position in hopes of a promotion. He anticipated the results of his test any day. He was really interested in the job, from understanding the coding system for the design software, to actually designing planes and jets. As much as he loved auto mechanics, he wanted something more, something new.

He also wanted to contribute to the Trident team. He had a constant desire to be needed. Todd knew it stemmed from the death of his mother and not knowing his father. It stemmed from never having had a constant person in his life and a home to call his own.

At least until Jake had brought him under his wing. He owed the man everything.

Jake would tell him he didn’t owe him a thing, but without the man, he wouldn’t have survived another year on the streets. Drugs had been his life, as was drinking and theft.

Why would Holly want anything to do with me? She’s too good for me.

The constant banter in his own mind told him every day he wasn’t good enough for the dreams he wanted. However, if he tried hard enough, and focused his mind, he could block out the darkness and focus on the light.

Todd stood naked from bed and pulled on a pair of shorts. He crossed the room to where his computer sat and turned it on. He logged into his Air Force account and found two emails were waiting for him.

His stomach dropped and nerves made his heart beat faster.

This is it, he told himself. This is it!

He navigated to the program and opened the two new messages.

One was his test results, the other was from the design program.

He sat back in his chair and interlaced his fingers on top of his head. What he read could change everything. If he passed, which he was pretty sure he had, it would open doors he’d never thought would be available to him. And if he was accepted into the program . . .

He decided it was now or never. He moused over to the first email and selected it.
